Here’s how HealthSelectShoppERS works: Sierra’s Journey

Sierra, a HealthSelect of Texas® participant, enjoys spending time with her young grandkids. But when she last chased them around, she felt out of breath, and her heart was beating very fast--even after lying down. Was it stress? Too much physical activity? Or did she need to make changes to her lifestyle? To find out, she called to schedule an appointment with her primary care provider (PCP).

Her PCP asked about her symptoms, family and health history and performed a thorough exam. He then recommended she see a cardiologist and submitted a referral to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) for an in-network doctor.

Sierra’s cardiologist performed some in-office tests and ordered a cardiac CT scan since her symptoms and physical exam pointed to a potential coronary artery disease (CAD) diagnosis. He sent a request for prior authorization to BCBSTX to get approval for the CT scan.

Sierra wanted to make sure to get the highest quality care at a low cost. She logged in to Provider Finder and searched for in-network imaging centers that could perform her CT scan.

She found a lower-cost, in-network facility with high quality ratings and got an estimate of her out-of-pocket costs. She scheduled her CT scan and found that she was eligible to earn $100 in TexFlex health care flexible spending account (FSA) rewards by using the HealthSelectShoppERS incentive program

Once the CT scan was completed and BCBSTX processed the claim, Sierra got the reward as a deposit in a TexFlex health care FSA that Employees Retirement System of Texas opened for her. She can use the $100 toward future FSA-eligible medical expenses like deductibles, copays, prescriptions or dental care.

Sierra’s CT scan confirmed she has CAD. Her doctor prescribed medication that will help manage her condition, and they discussed lifestyle changes that can help her feel better. Sierra is determined to do her part, so she also found a self-management program in Well onTarget® that helps people living with CAD. She feels great about taking these steps to get healthy and about earning a reward in the process.
